The Walter Hobart Seaton Family

A Genealogy

Although I have collected this small amount of information, I don't let myself get involved
in genealogy because I know me -- I'd get carried away and want to research ALL my
ancestors.  And just think how much time that would involve -- I'd rather build web pages!
I developed a page about Dad, with pictures.  It's at www.spaciousskies.me/Family/WalterSeaton.html

Here is some information from The Seaton Family, Oren Andrew Seaton, Editor; Crane & Company, Topeka, Kansas, 1906; Chapter LIV, pages 345-352, "Some Scotch-Irish Seatons" (a copy of the book is in Albuquerque, NM -- the New Mexico Genealogical Society has information about it).

James Seaton and his wife Martha lived in County Tyrone, Ireland, at a place called Dranity. He was a man of some wealth, and had 12 children, all boys: George, Thomas, Alexander, William, James Jr., Robert, David, Jared, John, Hezekiah, Joel, and Nathaniel.

(I went to www.maps.google.com and searched for Tyrone, Ireland; it is now in County Galway.  Marge, 3/22/10.)

George Seaton was born in County Tyrone, Ireland. He married Nancy Amberson in the old country, and came to America about 1778, settling in the Ligonier Valley, near Greesburg, and not far from Pittsburgh. George was a Captain during the Revolutionary War. He and Nancy had 12 children as well: John, William, Robert, Elizabeth, Thomas, Jackson, George, Jr., Amberson, Jane, Mary (Polly), Nancy, and Martha.

After Nancy Amberson Seaton died, George married a widow, Martha James Ausstraw; she was the daughter of Henry James of County Derry, where Martha was born. George and Martha had two sons: David, born February 22, 1802, and Alexander White Seaton, born May 23, 1804 in Westmoreland County Pennsylvania.

David Seaton was said to have come to the United States from Scotland, and settled in Ohio. If so, he must have traveled back to the old country then returned, because he married Catharine Piper November 9, 1826, and was living in Pennsylvania August 23, 1834. Their children and dates of birth:

Uriah C., October 9, 1828
Peter Piper, January 20, 1831
George Washington Seaton, August 11, 1833.
Jonathan Seaton, September 23, 1836
Washington Seaton, August 16, 1839
Martha Seaton, May 30, 1841
Mary Catharine Seaton, February 7, 1844
William Henry Seaton, May 2, 1847 -- June 19, 1901.  He married Georgianna Caton.

George Washington Seaton married Martha Purcell. At present, I only have their children's names, not their birthdates:

John Henry Calloway Seaton, born in Indiana
Elizabeth Jane (Lizzie) Seaton (died about age 3)
Lottie Seaton (died when about age 3)
Mary Ellen Seaton (born August 6, 1860 in Daviess County, Indiana. She died December 11, 1902 in Forsyth Taney County, Missouri).
[Thanks to Susan Bock, great-granddaughter of Mary Ellen -- Susan's grandfather was Vernon Allen Keithley, and her father had the same name.  7-Aug-04]
Nancy Catherine Seaton (or Katherine), married Alma Kelley.
They had a son, Tommy.  [Joe Kelley collected some of this information in 1956, but he had began with David Seaton.]
William Earnest Seaton (birth name Elisha William, but he changed it to William Earnest)
Lucy Seaton (died about age 3) -- she was younger than Will

Howard Mortimer "Mort" Seaton

William Henry Seaton's widow, Mrs. Georgianna Caton Seaton, was the informant for her line of Seatons. In 1906, she and her four children lived at Crane, Stone County, Missouri. Their children were:

Della Lavina, born January 6, 1884
Howard Mortimer, born January 6, 1886
Ida (?) Ethel Frances, born December 27, 1889
Floyd (Washington?) Seaton, February 11, 1892

John Henry Calloway (or Calaway) Seaton was my grandfather.  He married Martha Jane "Jenny Sue" Caton. They are buried near their parents in the Seaton cemetery in Taney County, not far from Branson. Both of my dad's grandfathers were named after our first President: George Washington Seaton and George Washington Caton.  Dad said one fought on each side during the Civil War, but he couldn't remember which was which.  Mrs. Caton's first name was Elizabeth, maiden name Weir.  They were the parents of Georgianna Caton Seaton, the wife of William Henry Seaton.  Thus, my dad had "double cousins," because his father married Martha Caton and his uncle married Martha's sister (at least I think they were sisters).  Lyola Chase Workman is researching the Caton side of the family, so some of this information is from her records.

NEW: One of my dad's "double cousins" was Bruce Seaton.  His wife was Dorthy Seaton; they were actors in the Shepherd of the Hills drama at Branson, Missouri for years.  Bruce's full name was Snyder Bruce Seaton; his mother's maiden name was Snyder. I checked www.FindAGrave.com and found them in the Crane (Missouri) Community Cemetery.

Gail P. added my Grandpa Seaton's obituary to the www.FindAGrave.com website... click here to read it; he was buried in Seaton Cemetery.  Here is the link to information about everyone who is buried in Seaton Cemetery in Taney County, Missouri, including my Grandma Seaton, Martha Jane Caton Seaton.

Nancy Catherine Seaton, born in Indiana, October 10, 1855 and died March 9, 1915, presents us with a mystery.  I think maybe Seaton was her married name.

The children of John Henry Calloway Seaton and Martha Caton Seaton were Byrdie, Ralph, Troy, Royce, Lonnie, and Walter (my dad).

At left, Byrdie Myrtle Seaton Chase, born November 16, 1886; died September 12, 1972. Married to Benjamin Chase, born March 11, 1885; died January 19, 1973. Both are buried in Eisenhauer Cemetery, near Reeds Spring, Missouri.  Their three children were Wilfred, Willard and Wilma.  Aunt Byrdie and Uncle Ben were married just 12 days before her brother Walter was born. She was 19 and Ben was 20.

Ralph Seaton, October 2, 1888. Married to Grace Seaton, born March 26, 1897

Troy Seaton, April 19, 1890

Royce Seaton, February 17, 1895. Married to Audra Rutledge Seaton, born on February 14

Lonnie Seaton, December 10, 1902

Walter Hobart Seaton, January 26, 1905; died April 1, 1982. Buried in Lyons, Kansas. Married to Dorothy Elizabeth V., born September 28, 1912. Dorothy (Mom) passed away April 1, 2004; she's buried beside Dad in the Lyons Cemetery.

LaVerne's birth name was Alta Luverne, but she changed it to LaVerne Alta V. She marred Frank John Wille. They had four children: Frank John "Boots" Wille, Jr., Mary Ann Wille Reith, Philip Wille, and Steve Wille. Uncle Frank died in 1982; Aunt LaVerne in 1996.
